How the Floral Sofa Continues to Reinvent Itself
If you look back to the 18th and 19th centuries, floral furnishings flourished in the Rococo and Victorian eras, at times representing the very epitome of luxury as fabrics became more beautiful, and higher quality. The trend evolved, going in and out of favour, before it found a new haven in 60s and 70s decor. This is, perhaps, where it tripped over its own laces. By the 1980s, realistic floral decors like Chinois patterns and blowsy bouquets were part of the quintessential English home – and, by the 90s, the floral sofa was officially left behind by the masses.
At least in popular interior design, more simplistic alternatives became more fashionable. The floral sofa took on a reputation – an unfair one – as a dated option for the living room.
Of course, as we know all too well, trends are cyclical, and it wouldn’t (and couldn’t) be too long before the floral sofa made its return. Besides, floral is a constant muse to designers – something we wrote about in The Floral Revival of 2023.
In 2021, Vogue made it official: Floral sofas are back in. It’s been a couple of years, and interior designers are utilizing its unique charms in exciting new ways.
The Return Of Floral Sofas
Done right, the floral sofa can be the focal point of a beautiful living space. Delicate and divine floral pattern, like our Ella May linen can intertwine to create a natural, subtly colourful, inviting aesthetic. The floral trend itself encapsulates everything bright and beautiful, adding colour to any room without even trying.
It's a nostalgic yet bold grand millennial style. According to Vogue, the Grandmillenial style has grandma in the name, aiming to take a splash of what our grandparents would consider stylish and add a creative flare that gives it such a timeless quality. It aims to focus on what we now consider to be nostalgic, and allow design and comfort to converge in a really beautiful way.
The Revival Of Floral Sofas
Patterned upholstery fabric is far different from the neutral tones we're used to in recent years, and that's why it's essential that the floral sofa revival is so much more than the return of a style that has been seen before. While it has echoes of that, it’s far more nuanced.
What you'll notice when exploring the rising trend is that the sofa itself isn't necessarily covered with a bold floral pattern. Bold colours – fuchsias and emerald greens evocative of a wild English garden – are being combined together with less regard for the ‘rules’ of colour and design.
That also isn't to say that modern interior designers aren't delving into the more traditional side of things, using pattern to create divine, delicate aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from the wide world of botanicals, buds – even fruit – they are bringing that caution-to-the-wind love affair we had with pattern some forty years ago back with a new zest for life.
You'll also notice that micro-florals and subtle botanical patterns feature in many recommendations, but so do wild and whimsical patterns. It's a style that toes the line between sentimental and avant-garde design.
A Return to Nostalgia
Whether choices are rooted in a shared yearning to spend more time outdoors and bring the outdoors indoors, or a simple appreciation for the beauty of organic shapes and colour – accompanied by a diminishing fear of décor that is too ‘busy’ or ‘chintzy’ – it’s clear that floral furnishings are entering a new era.
With it, we are seeing a definitive move toward more organic, natural textiles. The timeless beauty (and fabulous sustainability) of linen makes it a strong choice, not least of all because it lasts. With beautiful objects that are built to withstand the test of the trends – as floral itself is – we can regain a deeper appreciation for the things we use to decorate our homes.
Don't forget, the Grandmillenial style is about nostalgia and beauty – an appreciation for both, and what atmosphere they evoke in our living spaces.
It isn't just the floral sofa that's about to be reinvented in 2023, but it's sure to be one of the defining aesthetics of this next age of interior design. The key to the revival is moving away from the idea that florals are a wild force to be reined in if they are to keep a room from feeling cluttered and busy – and, instead, to appreciate the inherent beauty of florals, and the feelings they evoke.
