Ethnic Collection

A celebration of craftsmanship, brimming with pattern, colour and tales of time.

We seek to pay homage to some of Penny’s favourite global aesthetics with our Ethnic Collection through heritage craftsmanship. The collection embraces some of the rich and diverse cultures around the world that have so inspired Penny’s work since she began designing.

This collection weaves a complex web of histories and traditions, showcasing the exchange of ideas, imagery and techniques across borders and oceans. The result is a cultural tapestry brimming with patterns, colours and tales of time, drawing influences from Africa, Egypt, Morocco, South America and India. Our collection of woven fabrics, tableware, cushions and lighting embodies the beautiful craftsmanship of skilled makers in Ghana, Italy, India, and at home in England.

Penny has always sought to find artisans who understand the sensitivities of ancient techniques and traditional materials. As such, we have worked collaboratively with ceramicists, silversmiths, embroiderers, weavers and screen-printers, among others, to bring this collection to life.

Featuring an abundance of rich browns, sunny yellows, deep reds, sky blues, and strong greens, this collection uses colour effectively in a way that both sings to ethnic inspirations, and sits harmoniously within the wider Penny Morrison fabrics, wallpapers, and accessories collections.

First and foremost, we could not be more proud of this collection. Through months of exploration, learning, and collaborative design work, we have sought to represent and honour some of the techniques, materials, and craftsmanship found across the globe that have inspired Penny since her beginnings as a designer. We have relished in learning more about the enjoyable, yet sometimes painstaking, processes involved in creating such beautiful pieces. We hope that you enjoy them as much as we do!

Fabrics

This Ethnic Stripe is at the core of our Ethnic collection. The design pays homage to some of the textiles and patterns across the world that have inspired Penny's work.

The other weave we have developed for this collection is our Totem Vertical Stripe, inspired by patterns found in Ancient Aztec design

Both of these fabrics have been expertly woven at home in England. Bold and vibrant, this designs are brilliant for use as upholstery, their reversible nature making it an adaptable design. We love to pair the front and reverse sides within the same scheme for a unified but textured look!

Wallpaper

Ashok is one of the most timeless designs in the Penny Morrison collection, now available as a wallpaper. Featuring a vertical floral pattern inspired by Indian block printed motifs, Ashok represents Penny’s core design inspiration: classical British style paying homage to her travels.

A bold yet pleasing print, Ashok is adaptable to both masculine and feminine schemes alike, the cleverly chosen colourways giving the design a natural versatility which will find you wanting to use it in every room of the house!

Lighting

Handmade from the finest porcelain ceramic and glazed in a selection of vibrant colours, our Pineapple lamp bases are an Incredible example of exquisite craftsmanship; of skill passed down through family generations. Our Pineapple Ceramic Lamp Bases make for a spectacular statement piece.

We worked collaboratively with highly skilled Italian ceramicists, whose techniques have been passed down through generations, to produce this eye-catching design that is at the core of our Ethnic Collection. These lamp bases exude the eclectic and diverse cultural inspirations that have been gathered by Penny during her years of global travel. Many hours of love and hard work have been poured into these special lamp bases.

In addition to our ever-popular blue and pink tribal lampshades, we are excited to launch eight further colourways to the collection.

Our lampshade silk is sourced from India, where we use natural silk, which is expertly hand block printed by artisans.

Rich, earthy tones are balanced by the softness of the block-printing technique on wild silk. We’ve worked with our skilled block printers to perfect the colours that beautifully represent those found in the countries that have inspired the Ethnic Collection. The contrast silk trims are a brilliant way to tie your scheme together.

Tableware

Our Palma tablecloth has been designed with inspiration from an antique hand-painted fabric from Morocco, featuring a graphic of a palm tree and coordinating geometric pattern. The design has been reimagined into a bordered tablecloth, where the palm trees meet centrally to ornament the table.

We used shell-like details in the border to create our corresponding Palma napkins.

The design process - taking inspiration from a Moroccan antique fabric to create our Palma tablecloth and napkin designs.

We have chosen a colour palette of rich ochres, warm browns, and ruby reds, inspired by the tones of Morocco, and which we hope are representative of the original piece.

We worked collaboratively with artisans in India to create our elegant and striking silver-plated ice buckets. The craftsmanship and skill involved in creating these pieces is dazzling, and we are so proud to show them off.

Charming on a home bar or on the dining table, the smaller size is brilliant for filling with ice cubes in preparation for making cocktails, while the larger size is perfect for keeping wine bottles chilled for serving.

The final additions to our tableware within the Ethnic Collection are our Ghanaian Woven Straw Table Mats, in which we are proud to have worked in collaboration with artisans based in Ghana supporting women’s right.

The organisation seeks to break the cycle of poverty by empowering rural women through teaching them essential skills: the intricate skills of weaving straw to create versatile and bespoke products for people all over the world.

We are proud to be able to support this cause whilst preserving this beautiful artisanal heritage craft.

In two eye-catching colourways these mats can be used in a myriad of ways around your home. Use them as place settings on your dining table, hang them on your wall, or style them under a flower vase for a pop of colour.

Cushions

The design for the Charu Embroidered cushion was taken from a small clipping of fabric inspired by Mayan patterns. It has been reimagined into a sophisticated stripe in a warm colour palette of rusty oranges and verdant greens.

The cushion is backed with a screen-printed horizontal stripe in coordinating colours and is finished with green linen tassels.

Our Shanti Embroidered cushion was inspired by a piece of vintage silk embroidery. Made using screen-printed natural linen, embroidered in a rich colour palette, and finished with red tassels, this cushion makes for a chic centerpiece on a sofa or armchair.
