South African by birth, Penny is unbound by English tradition; her eclectic trade-mark style focuses on comfortable living, incorporating classical and contemporary elements to create elegant interiors which are individual and welcoming - a deliberate jumble of the old and the new, giving an unceremonious, almost eccentric atmosphere.
“I use a mix of antique and modern furniture to create an interesting atmosphere, while focusing on comfort. Understanding each client’s requirements and lifestyle, and the style of their property is the starting point; I always like to incorporate the clients existing possessions.”
The creation of her own range of fabrics is a natural progression born out of her extensive experience in interior design; “In the past I had trouble finding curtain and upholstery designs that I really liked, so I have designed my own range of linens. It is a very pretty collection of what I call ‘floppy linens’ based on old Turkish embroidery patterns, as well as traditional Indian motifs, hand-printed on tight weave linen.”
Penny designs all her own fabrics from her studio on the Welsh borders, based in a wing of the exquisite country house she renovated with her husband, and was subsequently featured in ‘The World of Interiors’.
